Sales training for managers: how to choose a format, what to check before ordering and what a trainer cannot promise
How to order sales training that changes day-to-day work: what must happen before, during and after the session, what the catalogue price is and which promises to question
Sales training is useful when it is built around your team, not a generic programme. Before ordering, find out three things: whether your calls and message threads will be diagnosed, whether situations from your own product are practiced, and what happens to the team after the session. If the answer to any of these is no, you are buying a motivational event, not training.
When training helps and when it does not
Training works when managers know the product but lead the conversation to payment poorly: they stall on objections, do not clarify the need, do not agree on a next step. These are skills and they can be practiced.
Training does not help if the problem is the process: no communication standards, a CRM pipeline that does not match reality, a manager who does not control the quality of conversations. Then the team returns to old habits within weeks. In that case you first need a sales system diagnostic or communication standards, and training reinforces them.
Three formats and who they suit
| Format | For whom | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Open group training | One manager growing on their own | Does not know your product and customers |
| Corporate session on your material | A team working with one product | Needs preparation: calls, threads, typical objections |
| Training as part of a sales system | A department where standards, CRM and control are also set up | Needs the manager's time |
For a business with its own team, the second or third option usually fits. The first closes a personal task of one person, not a task of the department.
What must happen before, during and after the session
Before. The trainer reviews call recordings, message threads and pipeline stages to find exactly where the team loses customers. Without this the programme is written blind.
During. Practice on real cases from your business: role-played conversations, difficult customers, objection handling. A lecture without practice is quickly forgotten.
After. Homework, a check of what was absorbed, and handover to the manager of ready control tools: call scoring criteria, a checklist, a feedback routine. Without this the skill does not stick.
This is the structure described in the AKORDO catalogue for the training service for managers and heads of sales: diagnostic, practice on real cases, homework. For how to reinforce standards and CRM work after training, see Sales team training: reinforcing communication standards, scripts, and CRM adoption.
What it costs and how long it takes
The AKORDO catalogue reference is $400-800 per session, 1-3 days plus follow-up. The exact amount depends on group size, process maturity and product complexity, and is named after a free consultation. Terms in the catalogue are indicative, not contractual.
When comparing proposals, ask what exactly the session price includes: whether there is a diagnostic, whether the trainer works with your recordings, whether there are tasks after the session and follow-up. A cheap session without a diagnostic and follow-up and a pricier programme with them are not the same product.
Questions for the trainer before ordering
- What do you build the programme on: our recordings or a ready template?
- What will the team do by hand during the session?
- What will the manager get for control after you leave?
- How do you separate the result of training from the effect of the market, product and prices?
- Is there a continuation: call reviews, score calibration, training of new hires?
What a trainer cannot promise
Revenue growth by a specific percentage, a guaranteed result within a stated period, a "change of mindset" in one day. Sales depend on the product, price, demand and lead quality, so an honest proposal describes the skills and tools the team will receive, not money. AKORDO does not promise a guaranteed financial result.
Where to start
If you are unsure whether the problem is skills or process, order a diagnostic: $600-900, roughly 7 business days. It shows where customers are lost and tells you whether training is needed. For new people in the department, also see Onboarding a new sales rep: the first 30 days. You can discuss the task at a free AKORDO consultation.
